Differentials

The curious case of a doctor wondering about the origin of her own maladies.

She is hardly the first one to do so. Most times, the easiest thing to do is ignore the cause and go forward with the treatment. In this case, it was a little burning sensation in her eyes. Was it because she slept too much, or because she traveled in 37 degree Celsius weather amidst a heatwave, or was it her eye cream she isn't yet sensitized to? Maybe it's the cream, yeah, she put on too much.

Either way, she could not study or expose her eyes to electronic glare. She had to wash her face repeatedly to get some semblance of a cooling effect over her eyes.

Maybe it was the stress of it all.

Do our bodily functions misbehave when they want us to cool down, or do we subconsciously cause our body to dysfunction when we are bored with life? Do we self-harm to get out of responsibilities, or does harm occur to us as a sign to not take that path we are so hell bent on striding upon? Life feels like a case of the differentials, which is when a doctor hears your symptoms and forms a set of probable diagnoses in her mind. Those diagnoses are ruled out eventually by testing and scanning procedures, and ultimately the doctor confirms the ultimate diagnosis.

Different experiences lead to different possibilities in mind, which a person in her 20s may or may not explore. How to know which path to take, whether to wait for a signal or not, what to do in moments of indecisiveness, when you just want to leave the decision making to some invisible being and relax a bit?

The smart thing to do would be to woman up and get right to it.
The plausible thing to do would be to take a short break and visit some friends or take a trip to the mall.
The protocol would be to stay at home and watch YouTube videos cuz of the 'rona.

Deciding upon a final course of action is just like deciding to splash water on your face when your eyes burn. What caused it is out of our hands since there is no time machine (it was definitely too much of that eye cream, maybe)... Probably doing one thing at a time is the best way. Like sticking to that confirmed diagnosis and following the course of treatment that goes along with it.

Or maybe just become a self-awareness guru and start a blog that is essentially cathartic in nature.
